PROMAT offers the BatcHHouse Rotary Scalpel

PROMAT has entered into an agreement to be able to offer the Rotary Scalpel to its existing and new customer base in Canada.
Rotary Scalpel Technology introduces a unique and revolutionary technology to the batching and filling process industries, recommended for applications requiring exceptional precision and ultimate process optimization of cost and quality The Rotary Scalpel offers a new level of precision in dispensing small increments of material into a batch or package. With the precision of a surgeon's scalpel, the Rotary Scalpel can deliver +/- 0.5 grams, independent of batch size. The Rotary Scalpel technology can be utilized to handle a variety of materials, even fines such as flour. Rotary Scalpel Technology (patent pending) utilizes two innovative key components: 1) a large inlet specially designed to insure consistent material flow into a rotary feed drum and 2) a pneumatic "scalpel."Upon receipt of a setpoint weight, the pneumatic scalpel will smoothly "knife off" from a filled vane of the rotary feed drum the precise amount of material needed to complete a batch or fill a container. Unneeded material remaining in the same vane is recycled back to the material source, eliminating all waste. In batching applications, the Rotary Scalpel can be applied as: 1) a batch dribble control system-stand-alone; 2) batch dribble control system complementing a fast fill batcher to complete the batch; 3) single ingredient loss-in-weight batch system performing both fast and dribble feed, simultaneously feeding multiple ingredients; 4) single ingredient gain-in-weight batch process system, performing both fast and dribble feed in new process lines or as an addition in an existing process line.

Volkmann Training?

The other day a couple of our people where at the Volkmann compound to engage in a little training.  I guess I for one misunderstood what we signed them up for.  The video below is a little sample of how far Volkmann will go to make sure their vacuum conveying systems will work well in your environment.  The video demonstrates an explosion test for baking soda.  I had no idea...

The Volkmann mantra is:
Sanitary, Safe, Trouble-Free Vacuum Conveying
and that is why they do extensive product testing before they put their vacuum conveyors to use on any product.  If you own a Volkmann system rest easy.

Volkmann systems are particularly well-suited to dust-tight, segregation-free and damage-free powder handling under vacuum. With features such as “No-Tools” dis-assembly and easy cleaning, as well as designs conforming to cGMP standards, air-driven Multijector® vacuum generation and ATEX certification for explosion-proof applications – it’s no wonder Volkmann is leading the industry with powder and granule pneumatic conveyor solutions.

Understanding Volkmann

Back in May we attended the International Powder show (PTXi) in Chicago.  One of our manufacturers, Volkmann who builds high-quality, high-performance pneumatic vacuum conveyors was exhibiting there.  During the show a Mike Wasson from Processing Magazine came by and on the spur of the moment shot a video at the Volkmann booth.  Nick Hayes of Volkmann in New Jersey who was quite likely a little apprehensive about having to adlib the whole thing, nevertheless does a fine job of relating the information.  The video shows both the VS and PPC units being taken apart which could be useful both if you have one and to see how easy it is if you are thinking about getting one.

While watching the video you will notice one of our own PROMAT team in the background (white shirt, good looking chap).  He is indeed our own Shawn Barber and you can see him helping a visitor understand the Volkmann system.  One can certainly appreciate and even almost comprehend what he is saying simply by watching his hands, and certainly you get a sense that he knows what he is talking about.

The "Black Art" of Pnuematic Conveying

The Basics of Pneumatic Conveying

Among the many facets of bulk solids material handling we at PROMAT have extensive experience with, one of the more difficult to wrap one's head around is pneumatic conveying.  While collectively we have broad experience with both pneumatic and vacuum conveying which goes a long way to shedding light on this "black art" it is nevertheless important to have a comprehensive understanding of the basics.
We  have in the past connected with Jack Hilbert of Pneumatic Conveying Consultants who is recognized as one of the "guru's" in this "black art".  Over at the Plattco Corporation website Jack Hilbert has begun authoring a series of articles to help everyone understand the basics of pneumatic conveying systems.

In Part 1 Jack describes the basic pneumatic conveying system, defines key parameters and the three primary types of systems.

In Part 2 Jack builds on Part 1 and lays the ground work for future articles by identifying key terms and definitions.
Part 2 -  Key Terms and Definitions You Need to Know

I join you in looking forward to the next instalment.
